Working to Decrease Toxic Chemical Usage
Over the past ten years, Modine has decreased the release of toxic chemicals to the environment by 89%, far surpassing the national average of 40%. Modine continues to target the reduction of toxic materials through establishing EMS goals and by its voluntary participation in USEPA’s National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) program. This is a nation-wide program that targets the reduction of 31 priority chemicals by U.S. industries.
"Participating companies are tasked to establish goals that reduce the use, or the waste generated, from certain chemicals. It's critical this includes using more environmentally friendly chemicals in Modine's processes," said Tom Meitner, Environmental, Health and Safety Manager.
Minimizing Waste
Modine reduces environmental impact through a continued emphasis on minimizing waste. Our waste minimization program was established in 1990 to reduce all production by-products, including: hazardous wastes, non-hazardous wastes, wastewater pollutants, air emissions, scrap metal, and trash.
Modine built on its successful history of environmental stewardship in fiscal year 2006-2007 by establishing corporate-wide objectives for the reduction of waste, air emissions and water use. Although not all of these objectives were achieved within the past year, the company made substantial progress. Modine facilities used 8.1 million cubic feet less water, a 26% reduction globally. Hazardous and solid wastes were reduced by 324,000 pounds and volatile organic compound air emissions cut by 56,000 pounds, reductions of 3% and 6% respectively. For fiscal year 2007-2008, Modine has again established company-wide environmental objectives and is increasing its focus at specific locations to achieve these goals.
